Vocations focus of pilgrimage to France
The Summer of 2008, 28 high school girls will make a vocational pilgrimage to France, with a specific emphasis on religious life. Accompanying the trip, organized by St. Michael Parish in Greenville, will be two Dominican teaching sisters from Mary Mother of the Eucharist.
“The whole purpose of the trip is to promote vocations and the understanding of life as vocation, that God has a purpose for each of us,” said Father James Campbell, parochial vicar at St. Michael.
The girls will tour Paris, where they will acquaint themselves with the life of St. Catherine Laboure, whose body is incorrupt, and St. Vincent de Paul. They will visit the Louvre, Notre Dame Cathedral, the Eiffel Tower and the Basilique du Sacré-Cœur (Basilica of the Sacred Heart), a popular landmark dedicated to the Sacred Heart of Jesus.
In Nevers, the group will venerate the incorrupt body of St. Bernadette and then head south to visit the shrine of Our Lady of Lourdes for the 150th anniversary of the Marian apparitions.
The excursion will also take the to Lisieux, Compien and Normandy where they will learn about the life and spirituality of St. Therese, Joan of Arc and the 16 Carmelite nuns of Compien, along with the fallen heroes of D-Day and World War II.
“Vocations are best heard, experienced and nurtured through the life of the church,” Father Campbell said. “That’s why I want to give them and encompassing trip.”
Last year, he took eight young men to Italy for an educational tour of Vatican museums, the early Christian catacombs, the four major basilicas of Rome, along with an excursion to Assisi and other cities.
The girls have been busy with fundraisers including fish frys during Lent and selling raffle tickets for a 1.3-karat diamond ring.
Any financial assistance that can be provided will help subsidize the cost of the vocation pilgrimage. Assistance can be sent to St. Michael’s France 2008, c/o St. Michael Parish, 85 N. High St., Greenville, PA 16125. For more information, call the parish at 724.588.9800.
